Once a Camera Operator – always a Cinematographer!

John Henshall joined the camera department of the BBC in 1961 as a teenager, straight from school. The first of many ‘stars’ he worked with were Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. He asked them to sign the script and that was the first time he was told off by his boss. But he still has the signed script! After a long career, John is now President of the Guild of Television Camera Professionals – the organisation he helped to create 51 years ago to represent the craft of camera operation. Throughout his career, John has always loved to take risks and break the rules. And he has delighted in inspiring students – the cinematographers of the future. Without the pictures created by photographers of the moving image, John reminds us that film and television would just be sound. We are crucial to the production, from script to screen.
